Google AI Overviews: Content, Controls and Measurement
This guide is part of the King of AEO learning library.
The short answer
Google AI Overviews present an AI-generated explanation within Search with supporting links. Publishers should maintain sound SEO foundations, useful source content and the intended Search generative AI inclusion setting. Inspect actual queries and cited pages, and use current reporting definitions. Eligibility and an observed appearance do not guarantee continued inclusion or prove a commercial outcome.

An AI Overview is one part of the Google Search experience. For a publisher, the relevant observation is the explanation and supporting links displayed for a particular query in a particular context. Do not treat its presence as permanent or assume every query should trigger it. Google’s feature documentation describes selective appearance and varying supporting links. The practical consequence is straightforward: save the actual query and visible feature, rather than reporting a general claim that a page “ranks in AI” without showing what the user encountered.
The information need determines whether your page is a plausible source. An illustrative query about choosing insulation may require material properties, installation constraints and climate context. A manufacturer’s product page could contribute a specification without supplying an independent assessment of every alternative. If the answer uses another source for a broad comparison, that is not automatically evidence that your page is defective. Begin with the role your content can credibly play. The search intent guide helps distinguish an introductory explanation from a product-specific decision and keeps the optimisation task appropriately bounded.
Check current eligibility and inclusion choices
Use the current Google generative AI optimisation guide for eligibility guidance. It retains search foundations and points publishers to the Search generative AI inclusion control. This matters because older descriptions of the feature may omit newer controls. A publisher should verify the setting that actually applies to the property instead of relying on a copied checklist. Keep ordinary indexing and snippet eligibility in view as well. A new feature control does not replace the need for a public page that search systems can access and understand.
The Search generative AI control documentation describes include, exclude and inherited settings. Check the effective property setting with the site owner, especially when a child property inherits a parent’s choice. Do not alter the organisation’s publication policy simply because visibility is being audited. The indexability guide covers whether a page can be included in search, while AI crawler controls covers the broader distinction between search access and training preferences. The goal is to establish whether the current configuration matches the publisher’s intention, not to assume that maximal access is always the chosen policy.
Publisher choice: Effective inclusion setting
Search eligibility: Accessible, indexed source
Source usefulness: Relevant facts and conditions
Overview observation: Actual answer and links
Measurement: Impressions and separate outcomes
Eligibility conditions and useful information enable consideration; they do not guarantee an AI Overview appearance.
Give the supporting link a worthwhile destination
A useful source page should make the relevant fact and its conditions easy to verify. For the illustrative insulation example, specify the product, measurement basis and application conditions rather than using a broad claim such as “the most efficient option.” If a table compares materials, explain whether the values are directly comparable. If installation quality changes the result, say so near the conclusion. These details serve a reader who opens the supporting link and needs to decide whether the answer applies to their situation. A citation that lands on vague marketing copy creates additional work for the visitor.
Use headings that reflect the reader’s questions, but let the content’s purpose determine its form. A technical comparison may need a table and explanatory paragraphs. An installation issue may need a sequence of steps. A definition may need a short answer followed by boundaries and examples. The answer-first content guide explains that structure without implying a required AI writing format. Link to detailed evidence where necessary, and keep the main qualification in the visible explanation. Sending every important condition to another page can leave the central answer misleading when read on its own.
Use the dedicated report within its documented scope
Google now documents a Generative AI performance report for Search. It reports impressions for supported features including AI Overviews and AI Mode, with page, country, device and date views. Read the report’s current definitions before interpreting a change. Do not describe impression data as click or conversion data. Also avoid assuming an aggregate feature report proves what happened in one saved query. The aggregate and the screenshot answer different questions: one concerns measured exposure in the report’s scope, while the other records a specific visible response.
Keep conventional Search performance and website outcomes alongside the dedicated view. If impressions rise but qualified visits do not, that is a pattern to investigate, not a contradiction to erase. If a page receives fewer ordinary search clicks after an interface change, inspect demand, query mix and other site activity before assigning the cause. The zero-click search guide explains why exposure and visits differ, and AEO reporting helps present the evidence clearly. Use the data you actually have rather than claiming a richer attribution model than the available reports support.
Review accuracy and choose the next improvement
For important queries, inspect the statement beside the supporting link. Check whether the answer refers to the correct product, period and circumstances. A source can appear while a condition is omitted or a comparison is overstated. If your page contributes to the ambiguity, improve the source. If the page is explicit, preserve the discrepancy without pretending you can force the generated wording to change immediately. The citation quality guide provides a practical support check. Accuracy is especially important when the source is being used for a decision that carries material cost or risk.
At the end of an assessment, separate configuration findings, content defects and uncertain visibility observations. A blocked or excluded property has a different next step from a clear, eligible page that was absent in one answer. A misleading product claim needs a factual correction, while duplicate explanations may need consolidation. Assign ownership to those concrete tasks and keep a change log. AI Overview work is most useful when it improves the source information and makes exposure easier to interpret. A favourable screenshot can be evidence of appearance, but it should not become a promise of lasting placement or guaranteed business value.
