Source Audits: Verify Evidence Behind Article Claims

The short answer
A source audit checks whether the evidence behind an article supports its actual factual claims. Identify material statements, open the original sources and inspect their scope, method, date and qualifications. Repair broken references, narrow overstated conclusions and explain genuine disagreement. Record the claim-level decision so future editors can understand what was verified and what remains uncertain.

An article can contain reputable references and still make unsupported statements. The relevant question is whether a particular source establishes the particular claim written beside it. Begin with material claims, especially those affecting a reader's decision or describing changing technical behaviour. Record the sentence and its supporting reference. A bibliography review that merely checks whether each link opens misses the central task: examining the relationship between the article's wording and the evidence the reader is being asked to trust.
Break compound claims apart when necessary. An illustrative sentence might say that a platform supports a feature, makes it available on every plan and uses it to improve ranking. A source may establish only the first point. Treat the remaining assertions separately rather than allowing one correct component to validate the whole sentence. Passage clarity helps rewrite the result so each factual claim and qualification remains understandable. This audit concerns the publisher's article; evaluating whether a generated answer faithfully uses its citations belongs in citation quality.
Retrieve the original evidence
Follow references back to the original documentation, research, dataset or statement where possible. A secondary article may explain a subject well, but it can omit a condition or repeat an outdated interpretation. Compare it with the primary material before relying on a precise technical claim. If the primary source cannot be located, record that gap. Do not silently upgrade an indirect reference into direct evidence. The article can attribute the secondary report accurately, narrow the claim or omit it until a stronger basis is available.
Preserve enough identifying detail to find the source again: title, responsible organisation, relevant version or date and a stable identifier where one exists. The Crossref REST API documentation describes access to scholarly metadata. Such metadata can help identify a publication, but a bibliographic match does not verify the study's conclusion or quality. Read the relevant material. A title, abstract or search snippet may not contain the method and limitations needed to decide whether the article's interpretation is justified.

Check scope before accepting the conclusion
Ask what population, product version, market or period the source covers. A finding about one sample does not automatically apply to every customer. Documentation for one product mode may not describe another. An old specification may remain useful for a historical explanation while being unsuitable for current setup instructions. These are scope questions rather than simple true-or-false checks. The appropriate repair may be adding a condition or narrowing the sentence, not deleting a source that remains valid within its actual boundaries.
Inspect numerical claims carefully. Identify the denominator, units, comparison group and any calculation the article performs. If the article derives a percentage from a source table, reproduce the calculation and label it as a derived result where readers need that distinction. Do not treat an illustrative example as research data or convert an association into a causal explanation. The original research guide covers study design in depth. During a source audit, the task is to ensure the published wording does not outrun what the existing method and data support.
Distinguish outdated evidence from disagreement
A newer source may supersede an older technical instruction, but date alone does not decide every dispute. A later commentary can be less authoritative than the original specification. Two credible studies may examine different populations or use different methods, producing findings that are compatible once their scope is understood. Compare those differences before choosing the more convenient conclusion. If a genuine disagreement remains relevant, explain it accurately rather than presenting one side as settled fact simply because it makes the article easier to summarise.
For unstable platform claims, consult current official documentation and record the specific behaviour verified. Avoid assuming that familiar guidance is unchanged. A source audit should be able to identify which statements need periodic rechecking and which are relatively stable. Use content freshness to establish maintenance priorities, then connect the affected claims to the content inventory. This creates a practical dependency: when a source changes, editors can find the articles relying on it instead of hoping that someone remembers where the old advice was repeated.
Repair the wording with the smallest honest claim
When support is incomplete, choose a repair that preserves useful information without adding certainty. You may qualify a statement, attribute it to the source, remove an unsupported extension or replace it with a better-supported explanation. Do not simply attach another link and leave the same overstatement intact. A reader should be able to understand the corrected claim from the sentence itself. A distant disclaimer cannot reliably undo an unconditional promise in a headline, answer box or comparison table that is likely to be read independently.
The Reuters standards provide a primary example of explicit expectations for sourcing and corrections. They illustrate an accountable editorial practice, not a certificate that can be borrowed by citing the standards page. Use a correction process appropriate to the publication and the significance of the error. If an unsupported claim changed the article's conclusion, revisit the summary, title, diagram and recommendations too. Repairing one sentence while leaving its consequences elsewhere can preserve the same misleading impression under a more carefully sourced paragraph.
Record verification in a reusable form
A useful audit record identifies the claim, source, checked scope, conclusion and required action. Keep the note concise but precise enough that another editor can understand the judgement. A status such as checked is insufficient when the next review needs to know whether the claim was verified for a particular release or only attributed to an interviewee. The W3C provenance overview describes relationships among information, activities and responsible agents. A simple claim log can capture those relationships without requiring a formal provenance system.
Prioritise the most consequential and unstable claims when the article is large. This does not excuse ignoring obvious errors elsewhere; it establishes a sensible order for review. A high-level educational definition and a current product availability statement may need different review depth. Record any areas not examined so the completion claim matches the work performed. If the article requires specialist expertise beyond the reviewer's competence, route the specific question to an appropriate specialist. Do not replace that gap with an AI-generated reassurance that repeats the original unsupported claim in different words.
Finish by checking the published result against the audit decisions. Confirm that corrected links reach the intended evidence and that qualifications survived editing and layout. Update source dependencies and hand off any ongoing checks through the content refresh workflow. A source audit is complete when the article's material claims are aligned with appropriate evidence and the unresolved issues are accurately represented. Its value is the integrity of the explanation readers receive, rather than the number of references added or the appearance of an impressively long source list.
